Military credit is a valuable piece of your education. The credit re-evalution process will provide a way for you to connect with faculty to evaluate your military courses. Any supporting documentation that you can provide, such as a syllabus or course outcomes list, will assist in the evaluation. Credits may apply differently in different colleges, programs, or majors and it is possible that some military credit may not apply. Your adviser will provide guidelines in how your credits will be applied to your degree program.
Begin with Your Adviser
Credit re-evaluation requests should begin with your adviser. When you go to your meeting with the adviser be sure to bring a copy of your Joint Services Transcript. You can access your military transcript by visiting https://jst.doded.mil (if you do not have a copy of your JST you can print one for free in the Veterans Center). If you were in the Air Force and may have Community College of the Air Force credit, it would beneficial to provide the course description for any courses that you took. Please visit http://www.airuniversity.af.mil/Portals/10/CCAF/documents/CCAF_2017_2019_General_Catalog.pdf to locate course descriptions.
Department Review Processes
An adviser will be able to assist you with the Request for Department Review of Transfer Course Form that will be used to move your request forward. This process will be aided if at least a course description and preferably a syllabus can be provided to the reviewer. The faculty reviewer may require that the student meet with them to discuss information about the course.
Due to the classified nature of military materials or for other reasons, it may be difficult to provide your adviser and faculty evaluator with the necessary documentation (e.g., course description, syllabus, completed coursework, etc.) to receive credit towards your degree. However, if you believe that your previous military coursework and/or experience equates to a course at ISU, test-out options may be available.
- Iowa State awards credit for the following types of exams:
